I just want to second the clicker training. In high school, my sister had this monstrous tank of a moon-jumping OTTB who was also the most unconfident horse imaginable (and he was supposed to be her event horse...ha! that didn't work out). Anyway, she ended up using clicker training to do all sorts ...

Depending on how you define "vacation" you could also go the short-term working student route somewhere. I did that last year and it worked well. Just be upfront and clear about expectations and such! This year, on my travels back to the US, I'm going on a couple-day horse trek in New Zeal...

I do what Mountaineer does. A few other tips--toss the pill into the back of the throat/back of the tongue. If you need to use the eraser end of a pencil to flick it further back (just don't shove it down too far!). Once you close the mouth with the head tilted up, if the cat is refusing to swallow,...

Re: a few questions before I royally mess up the hoes I'm leasing
I second the thought on checking out his teeth. Definitely only change one thing at a time with bits (my horses tend to like the french-link as well), and since you want him chewing and relaxing, I'd maybe even forgo the noseband entirely in the beginning (esp. if he's more accustomed to a western b...

Re: It seems like horses always present you with something you haven't seen before.
We had an older horse with heaves; it made a big difference for him to live out on pasture 24/7 (we lived on the prairie so it was windy, but that didn't bother him so much) than to be in even a barn with decent ventilation or a stall. He was an old retired showhorse, so he wasn't working hard anymo...

I've rehabbed about 7 dog-aggressive dogs here in PNG (people have large GSD-type guard dogs that never get socialized, so when the family leaves for a year to go to their home country, often the dog ends up at my house where he gets a year of diet, training and socialization and then goes back to t...

For one of my students who has a hard time with her pony running into the canter, I have her aid from a trot going up a hill. She's due to be trimmed tomorrow and yes, will be taken back short. Horses' feet grow very fast here, because they are in soft pastures and ridden on grass; there's no natural trimming on rock or gravel (so knowing who trimmed her last time, the wall has probably grown to double or even 70% more in ...

Hm, now that's a thought!
Our semi-optimistic update is that after daily topical application of ivermectin the lumps in the neck appear to be diminishing slightly and hair seems to be growing back on the belly, so maybe that's the trick! We'll keep going and see what happens.

Yes, my first guess (after the rainrot was ruled out) was ringworm, and we treated it accordingly, but it never changed (though didn't try Clorox). It seemed fungal, so we've since tried a couple other creams, but it doesn't seem to be responding.

Hmm, I think I've got some DMSO somewhere. kande--yes, I've not seen anything like this either. Some of our horses get hives or insect bites, but this isn't that... Tea tree oil with aloe is a good idea; we've used it on some other horses, but I didn't think to put it on her. And I have the listerin...

Yes, we just dewormed with ivermectin again, and back when this first arose I treated her for neck threadworms (one of our other mares here has those and ivermectin is the only thing that controls her itchiness.) It made no difference.
