Re: Tips on improving the walk
My 4 year old pony mare has a similar walk. Here's a few things we are doing: * Lots of hacking (and her hacking buddies all have bigger walks) * Poles and raised poles to show her that she can do a bigger walk stride * Always free walk across the diagonal, with neck scratches and 'good girl!" ...

Re: Who rides bareback?
I do most of my hacking bareback, over all sorts of terrain. I find it really helpful to maintain balance and side-to-side evenness. I have a thinline bareback pad that gives a little padding and grip. Both of my mares are plenty wide, so that helps.

Haha. Autumn not only stays laying down, but needs a fair bit of convincing to get up from nap time. I can sit on her back and do a rather exuberant "giddy up, pony!" and she just sighs and gives me a look. Nia, not sure yet. I haven't caught her napping.

Great discussion, folks! and timely. This has been the winter of lateral work for me and Autumn (addressing some longstanding crookedness on both of our parts). We've got a few EHV-1 infected barns in the area (Ontario) and it is scary. Hoping that the biosecurity measures keep it from spreading further. Another 'off-breed' fan here. I grew up riding Morgans, and when I finally purchased my first horse as an adult, I bought a western working Morgan (these are the bloodlines that developed as ranch horses in the west). When I bought my next horse, I wanted something with a bit more aptitude for dress...

Thanks to everyone for being excited about the new pone. I'll try and get some pics this week. I've spent the first few days figuring out what she knows. I have one of the custom Nunn Finers (my Morgan needed a tiny noseband, pony-sized cheek pieces and a horse-sized crown and brow band).
