Rabbits!!

Postby keirajohnston » Tue Sep 27, 2022 4:32 am

My horse, being a cob has feather which I generally do not mess with other than to keep tidy as they get a bit straggly at the ends. Someone on our livery yard is convinced that this is because wild rabbits nibble them....! My first thought was "what utter horse manure." and a Google search hasn't turned anything up. Anyone else heard this? Is it fact or am I justified in my opinion?

I hadn’t heard that one but on the COTH, there is a thread about rats chewing on the coronet of the hoof :!:  .

I suppose grazing bunnies could nibble a bit of hair?

Do you ride him in a sand arena? Sand is quite abrasive and will abrade the feather. Or if he's itchy he might be doing it himself. Some horses just have more robust feather than others. My Shire mare had a full feather curtain to the ground no matter what. My big gelding has very fine feather and when I was showing him it would get worn off nearly to the hair line just from working in a sand arena.
