Close, but how close? ETA - it's a filly
How long is a piece of string??
She is a maiden. Inseminated (AI) on 5th Jan, so due approx 15 Dec or thereabouts if I use 342 days.
She was a big mare to begin (she is only juuuust 16.1hh). Stallion also 16.1hh.
Her bag has been developing over the past two weeks. Today was the first day her hindquarter has started to look slightly "slack", and her udder is tight.
No wax (which I realise may or may not develop), no milk. Tonight she told me off for touching her belly on her itchy spot that she normally loves to have scratched.

Re: Close, but how close?
I think we should guess the date! December 11th.
Re: Close, but how close?
The person who is supposed to be foaling her is calling past this morning to have a look. We've been in regular contact (with photo updates) for the past few weeks, as I don't want to send the mare away too far before foaling... but you don't know it's time until it's TIME! Unfortunately she is supposed to be away this weekend as we thought the mare was going to hang on until past 'due'. But we'll discuss strategy today... I may just borrow foaling alarm or something like that.
Re: Close, but how close?
Chances are foaling alarm won't work as paddocks are too far from house (even though I can hear the horses snort from my room). She thinks more likely this weekend than tonight/tomorrow, and that, though mare is maiden, because she's well bagged up, she will probably wax up and might start dripping milk (also noted that could happen within hours of birth, as opposed to days). So I'll continue my checks, I'll start taking photos every day to track the changes/developments, over the weekend I might sleep in the paddock (!!!) or something... Wish we had a tent!!
I will probably separate my grazer from my horses, as I don't trust it (I trust my other mare).

Re: Close, but how close?
I would have put her due date at 12th Dec
Her teats haven't fully developed yet, so she will probably be another few days off at least. They will get a definite shape to them and probably start to look forward more.
Its a very random season at the moment. A lot of studs have been saying the mares have been running mainly 2 weeks 'late' and now this weather is sunny/wet/hot/cold some mares are just shutting up shop and not doing anything!
We are trying to serve a mare at the moment. She is not playing ball at all. She's been sitting on a massive follicle (4.5 at last scan) for the last 9 days - have served her 3 times along with giving her plenty of drugs to get her to ovulate... It's just not happening...

Do you remember the first drought year? 2008. It was the year Scarlett was up in Auckland on that terrible lease. She wouldn't play ball either, and then we had that huge drought, major feed shortage, etc. I wonder how much they "know" that we don't.
Looking last night and today, Indy doesn't look as ready as I thought. But she's definitely changing!
I too have heard of a lot of mares going over this year. One as long as 373 days
Re: Close, but how close?
Had an older maiden mare go much longer than that, and she had a small foal. It simply took longer to 'cook' a very cute filly. When the inside of the vulva is bright red, usually foals within 12 hours.
Re: Close, but how close?
Still no foal, and she doesn't look more ready than the other day, which to me was "not tonight" or maybe even "in a few days".
Re: Close, but how close?
She still looks close, but has that "not today" appearance.

Still has a few more days to go!
But the countdown is definitely on!

Re: Close, but how close?
The hilarious thing is that her udder looked totally shrunken after I dragged her around on an hour-long ride. Mostly walking, but it is the most enforced exercise she's had since before I got hurt (7+ weeks). Will do the same tomorrow (exercise is good for her).
Re: Close, but how close?
Yup, if it's still going up and down. That means she's probably a little more way off than I've been thinking. My bet is still on the 12th
Generally the udder bags up in the night, when they do very little walking and down in the day with the exercise. Which is why it decreased after the walking today...

Re: Close, but how close?
First night of overnight checks, DONE. She is probably heading off to foaling quarters tonight or tomorrow night. I think she's only days away... This was my not-quite-2am surprise (no, not a foal). So now I have to figure out how to trap this stoat, before it gets to our chickens or something. It had a very baby rabbit which it dropped while I was trying to take a photo and it was trying to figure out why everyone was so interested in it, so I took that away.
Re: Close, but how close?
Indy is delivered to her foaling digs.
She's ready.
And now... a little girl waits.

Filly born 1.30am this morning. Up and happy and drinking. No pics yet. Mare is extremely foal proud (which I half expected!).

Re: Close, but how close? ETA - it's a filly
Beautiful! Congrats on a pretty filly-love her star!
The calmer I am, the stronger I am.
Re: Close, but how close? ETA - it's a filly
My god, she's bloody gorgeous. Supermodel legs (her bum is nearly waist high on me - I'm a smidge under 5'7") and a fabulous personality.
Bought the pair of them home. Loaded without a fuss (foal lifted in as I have a step-up), travelled well, unloaded nicely, now happy in a paddock of grass. *swoon*

Errr, 5'7", hahaha
Re: Close, but how close? ETA - it's a filly
Name game time!!
Dam is Stiletto (Ramazotti - technically Dutch WB, though his sire was Holsteiner) and sire is Campion (TB x Holsteiner). Ideally beginning with C but I am open to everything at the moment. I prefer paddock names to relate to the full name so something that can be shortened/adapted would be great.

OK, here's a killer of a name - Cloak and Dagger, shorten to Loki.
May be better suited to a colt.

Re: Close, but how close? ETA - it's a filly
Just revisiting to see if your foal was born yet and see that it was! Congrats but where are the new pictures?
Re: Close, but how close? ETA - it's a filly
Erm, they're all on facebook, sorry! Daily photo and/or video updates. I haven't had a chance to sit down and figure out either saving them to my computer to load up here, or sharing them here directly from my phone. It may happen this weekend...
She's wonderful. I decided to call her Confetti (dam is Stiletto, sire is Campion). Still mulling over a paddock name... I like them to relate, but I named the mare (she arrived as Dancer, I changed that to Indy, and also picked her reg. name Stiletto) and I think I like Lucia for the foal (loo-see-a, not loo-sha).
