My cat's leg is changing color

So, our beloved almost 2-year-old orange kitty, Pumpkin, started out completely orange. Around December his left front leg suddenly turned white from paw to mid-leg, with a couple of bonus white spots a bit further up the leg. Now, over the last couple of days, it's started going back to orange, with the color developing from the paw up, just like the white did. I have had many many cats over the years, but they've all remained their same factory-installed color, so I'm a bit confused. He's very happy and healthy otherwise. Any thoughts?

Winter coat versus summer coat? What is his skin color? Just a guess as I have no idea

Very strange. Non of the orange kitties I have had have ever done this. I do have a dog that changes coat colors from summer to winter. She has a strange color anyway, gets darker in the winter much like a bay horse does.
