sliding side reins

So I found an instructor that has experience with gaited horses. He came out yesterday to evaluate Rustle and I. I have to start lunging him in side reins. I have those sliding side reins with all the little d rings in them. It's been over 20 years since I've had to use them. Does anyone know how to actually attach them to the surcingle and the bit? Do they have to be in a triangle or can I just use them like regular side reins until Rustle gets used to a bunch of gear he's never had to wear? He was great for the instructor yesterday. With me, he was a freak show. This too shall pass...I hope.
