Re: Horse shopping, how did you know what you want?
Piedmontfields ha ha ha I actually rode the horse and when I watch the video it took me probably even more times to realize that that was the spook ha ha! The lady was just telling me that he likes to look around a lot and occasionally will spook. She said he's always been sensible about it and my ride certainly showed that as well. I was kind of laughing because it really is just not a big deal. But like the owner said a very very timid rider might get a little bit nervous. And I could see him being the type that if you did get nervous or you kind of weren't there to reassure him then it might turn into a bigger thing. But as you can see if you are there for him it's barely a blip on the radar.
I do like a very expressive eye and I will say he does seem very expressive. It is smaller than I would prefer absolutely. But he doesn't have a hard eye or a stubborn looking eye if that makes sense. He can definitely get those wrinkles in there a little worried but I've had horses like that before and I was fine with them. They just needed a little bit more reassurance.

I think the eye shape thing is a bit of an old farmer's tale. Meaning while there might be SOME correlation between a smaller eye and spooking, i don't think there's any actual causation!

Blob, I think you are right. And at least he's sensible about it. I'd maybe be a little more concerned if he was shooting off into the air every time him spooked.
I did go with my sister-in-law shopping years ago. We looked at a horse and he had a very small eye definitely what I think people consider a pig guy ( and maybe this guy does too but the shape and look is different.) Just the look of this horse (My sister in laws) all around just gave me a sense he was going to be pretty stubborn. And she's had him 5 years. And he can be pretty dang stubborn. But he also can be pretty sweet and try hard. My sister-in-law does pretty good with those types of.
The guy I'm looking at comes off That's just more of a sensitive soul but still sensible. It's kind of the type I look for. I haven't seen the inkling of extreme stubbornness.

I'm feeling pretty excited!! Love this feeling! There have been times in my life when I go to vet a horse, feeling almost dread. I feel hopeful this time. Fingers crossed.
Re: Horse shopping, how did you know what you want?
I’m rooting for you this morning, LSP!
Re: Horse shopping, how did you know what you want?
Fingers crossed! Buckskin is one of my favorite colors and is one reason why I bred my bay mare to Saphiro who is a cremello and is Joplin’s sire

He passed with flying colors. Every x-ray super clean!! I left a check but it won't be official until the 5 panel comes back clean (we think it will.)
Yay!!!
Now to figure out when to put him into training. Or let him hang for a month.

Re: Horse shopping, how did you know what you want?
Congrats! It's going to be a fun ride. Let the journey begin!
BTW if you lived closer we could always work on a pas de deux with your new guy and my stinker pony (also a buckskin with chrome).........many years ago I did one with my daughter's section A welsh - a fat fuzzy grey with my best friend on her trakhener , a taller fat fuzzy grey to "me and my shadow remix".....it wasn't that technically difficult but all got a huge laugh out of it.

Very excited for you! Wishing you a great journey together.
Re: Horse shopping, how did you know what you want?
Congratulations!
If you put him in training, are you close enough to see him a lot? I would definitely want to get to know him on the ground, but I would be concerned about bringing him home and letting him get comfortable only to change everything again in a month at a different place.

Re: Horse shopping, how did you know what you want?
Blob yeah the trainer I like to use gives lessons as part of her training package. And I would go work with him even if it's just grooming on his days "off."
I'm excited to get to know him too. He will definitely be a bit of a project just because it's obvious that at some point someone's been a bit rough with him. You can tell he just expects to get in trouble and gets smacked on. I think he will enjoy my quiet and calm demeanor.

I bet he will come around quickly.

Very excited for you and to watch the progress. Does he have a name?
Keep calm and canter on.

SF, that's how this guy seems (although I would not call him hot.) I really think he needs a person, some consistency, and kindness. He really wants to be a good boy.

We got over 2 feet of snow so I'm hoping we can get him moved before the end of the week (trying for tomorrow.) Then the bonding begins!
