I know two of the horses involved in this horrible mess. There was a third, but he died. Very, very sad.

What's the back story of this case?

Also noticed this in the first link...
If a purchased animal was not previously implanted with a microchip, it has been implanted with a LifeChip® with Bio-Thermo™ technology which is capable of measuring body temperature.
How could having a chip that measures body temperature be helpful?

We had a filly by Romeo. We sold her, but she was super sweet. He made it back to Tennessee safely, but very thin. Which one died? Which others do you know and are they horses you'd recommend?

Re: the microchip, I guess you could wave the wand and get temp, which beats doing it rectally on some horses.

And Lyme disease for several of them as well as the need of rescue from humans? Poor babies! Hope they all land healthy and safely... and cause/experience much joy... in their new homes.

Chips that read temp would be a great tool for endurance and 3day riders in their conditioning work. It would be worth it to get a reader for these type trainers
These chips are universal and used a lot in research animals
