I was married for 10 years, no children. I really got along with my in-laws. Nice, normal, down to earth people who cared about me. My ex left me for another woman 15 years ago who he subsequently married then they moved out of state. I am still good friends with my ex sister-in-law (Lisa) and her partner.
Ex MIL died Friday and I went to the wake last night. It was good to see the relatives. My ex was ready to bolt when he saw me come in the room, but I stood in front of him, gave him my condolences, then let him run and hide.
I am so sad today about my ex mother-in-law. I feel so bad for Lisa and her dad. I didn't have a relationship with my in-laws since the divorce, but we kept abreast of each other via Lisa and there were never bad feelings between us.
Some grief today.

I'm sorry about your mother-in-law passing away, but I am impressed with how very grown up and adult you are. I think we know all we need to know about your ex-husband "ready to bolt'"

Ready to bolt as in he saw me and started for the door. I grabbed his sleeve and made him stop so he could receive my condolences. Then set him free and he pretty much stayed on the other side of the room while I was there.

I suppose it's already done. No matter what your relationship with you ex, he just lost his mother. The wake and funeral were for grieving. I think it's understandable for him to want to avoid awkwardness.

Re: My ex mother-in-law died
There should be no awkwardness 15 years later. I'm not offended that he didn't want to talk to me. He came to my dad's funeral 2 years after we divorced and that was fine. I'm glad I went to my ex MIL's wake to show respect for my ex FIL and Lisa.

Sounds like your (ex) in-laws were first and foremost your friends. I, too, am glad you were able to attend the wake, despite the tension of your previous situation. I bet FIL and Lisa were touched that you were there. Very sorry for your loss at this time.

You did the right thing by going. I went to both of my ex father-in-laws funerals. It shows respect for the deceased and for those that loved them.

That's very sad, I'm sorry.
Friend of mine just lost her MIL two weeks back as well. Very small family. Her husband is feeling like it's just him against the world now.
These transition times are hard. Take care of yourself.
