One thing to consider with buying a palomino or horse of any odd color or one that has spots is that you stand out and are remembered. That can be a good thing, or a bad thing.

How common is palomino in WBs or crosses though? Pretty small sample size I would guess. Definitely more common in the Iberians, but prices are not always cheap for them either. Probably could get a young one for $15,000.

What I've seen, it's mostly in the RPSI, but the color comes at a premium, and you can get more quality in a plain bay or chestnut package at the same price point.

Regarding the palomino mare Redsox mentioned, I wonder if this is it. This one is around 5k usd. I don't know what shipping is for a mare from UK. It's around 10k to new york counting quarantine.

Interesting filly, but not the one I know of. The one I know of is 4 this year, 6500 GBP or best offer. She is by Treliver Decanter and is lightly started. The pic below is her as a 2yo.

Although I love QH and have a pretty decent one I really don't think you will do well in the upper levels with a stock type horse unless they just have exceptional gaits for a QH. Morgans are starting to breed more color and I've seen some Palomino Morgans that are gorgeous. Might be a possibility?

I know and honestly understand the point you're making, but I hate discouraging people like this.

Of course there are QHs that can't, but there are also lots of QHs out there that, put into the right hands, can do well in the upper levels. They're just not given a chance! If you find a horse with quality-but-average gaits but a giant heart, you can do just fine. I know QHs out there killin' it in upper level dressage, and know of more that would be more than capable if their riders threw a dressage saddle on them and asked.

There are also lots of other breeds that might fit the bill, of course. That's the point of shopping -- to find the right match!

Kelo - I agree with you. It is really the goal of finding the horse with the right mind and quality gaits to do the job. (Plus the right conformation to make the job easy and not a constant struggle.) This was my huge disappointment with my unsound PT/QH. Holy crap if I could put his brain and work ethic into another horse - holy smokes!! Plus he had up hill front end and great shoulder like a WB so was able to get some decent extensions out of him. His QH butt gave him the ability to sit and collect. He loved a job and very focused in his ring work = fun talented riding partner. Oh yeah - throw the lead over his shoulder to self load in the trailer. Bikers on the trails did not phase him - he owned the trail. Sadly our riding time was cut short.

I really like the ranch bred QHs, they are bigger boned, tend to be level and very athletic with a good brain. I've contemplated on trying to find a good QH mare to breed to a Andi/Lusitano for an Azteca.

I think they are out there and for me personally I would prefer a QH to a draft cross. I've seen some really nice ones and have ridden a few too. That is a good looking pally morgan! But they want to sell him to a breeding home looks like.

I will re-iterate that you absolutely can find this. Look at the horse, the 'real' horse, not the label/papers.
Quality training and riding will get you far and it sounds like you have the skills.

This is an amateur, showing 4th level, scoring high 60s, qualified for regionals.
This horse is not a warmblood, was not imported, and did not cost a fortune.

ponichiwa, the roan was not put out there as a prospect but to show that there are definitely QHs out there that could fit the bill. He looked ranch bred to me and that is the lines where that blue roan is often found. Totally agree on the "dancing" horses but I have to say that is one that actually looks like he is handling the pressure ok. There is another video of him at the trot in HI/HP and in canter. Lovely gaits on that horse. I would have one like him in my barn.

Yes.
There is another palomino ASB currently showing PSG on the west coast...and, though not a palomino, but a flashy flaxen mane and tail Chestnut, Fancy Trick was Hilda Gurneys Saddlebred/Arab (National show horse) Grand Prix horse.
... and I watched a Morgan (not palomino though) win a competitive local Grand Prix class earlier this year.
3 decent gaits, brain, and quality training and riding...

Week 1 update: no real progress, to be honest.

However, I've got a lead on a 1/2 welsh, 1/2 WB (holst) gelding that might work out. I've honestly really enjoyed all the welshies I've worked with over the years, and they tend to be athletic hardy little workers. We'll see.

7 yo Palomino Connemara Cross Gelding 15.3 hh

Triton was born to be an eventer! He's a natural: brave, honest and makes every jump feel easy. He gets his striding and leads without much thought to it. He will jump anything you put in front of him. Great with banks, ditches, drops, water etc. Free jumped to 3'9" with ease. He's an efficient jumper (rarely over-jumps) but is incredibly capable and handy. Lightly started jumping last year to allow him to fully develop and the video is just his second time cross-country! Excellent away from home and enjoys going new places. Calm, cool and steady. His dressage work is coming along and he's starting to go into the bridle and bend around my leg. Nicely sensitive to leg, not hot nor sluggish. Smooth gaits, not a huge mover. Turns on the forehand, haunches and leg yields. He's a trail machine and absolutely loves going trail riding. Happy to lead or follow. Walks out nicely. Great to hack out and good with cows as well. Easy to tack up and groom, vacuums, fly sprays and is easy for the vet and farrier. Loads and hauls easily. No beginners please, no bad habits but he needs a decent rider that can continue to bring him along. Arena and especially dressage work is boring for him so needs a trail ride or hack out for every 2-3 arena rides to stay happy. He's got a ton of personality and is a bit of a goofball. Loves his turnout and horse friends. Middle to high on the pecking order. Fine with time off, hop on and go. Amazing, most perfect home is a must. Would like him to go to a rider that enjoys the progress and partnership of bringing a horse along, loves trail riding/ hacking out and enjoys riding outside of the arena more than in it! $15,000

Well, I think the OH lead is likely not going to work out. I'm sure he'll find a good home.

Which means I'm still on the hunt. Xanthoria and others, thanks for the links. I think for my purposes the west coast is likely too far, and I'd like to limit the search to horses under 6yo to space out my current horse and the up-and-coming one.

So, slightly refined criteria:
- Still palomino if possible
- Under $15k
- Under 6yo (unbroke is OK)
- 15-17h
- Gaits capable of scoring 7s (no impurities in the canter/walk, etc)
- Sound

I'm toying with scheduling an appt to see the Benidetto mare in Ft Worth. Violates criteria 1, but hits the rest. Decisions, decisions.

Interesting. Maybe VII is marketing for them and taking a commission? They had a list of several horses in one post, and multiple locations. I don't know anything about either business, so caveat emptor, as always, and triple that with horses.
