My farrier is a really nice guy. But he's twice cut my horse too short this year resulting in me having to give him time off.
I'm switching to another farrier but I have to tell my old farrier that I'm switching. How do I do this?? Ugh.
How do you break up with your farrier?

You write him a note or text him, thanking him for his previous work, but you have decided to go in another direction.

Does he know about the problems? I like Paula's suggestion. If he knows about the problems, he won't be surprised that you're switching.

I left a message with the former farrier cancelling our future appointments.
But, I didn't care about his feelings or burning bridges. The guy was a fill-in while my long-time farrier was injured, and he was angry, impatient, and abusive with my sweet arthritic 37yo mare.

I sent one farrier a letter. Thanking him for his service but stating my desire to go in a different direction. I believe I called the last one to tell him I had gone over to the dark side (barefoot) which is still where we are at. I do use boots when protection is needed.

I'd love to know who you are going to work with now Boudicea.
