Walking on the Moon

Postby texsuze » Sat Jul 20, 2024 4:04 pm

Today marks the 55th anniversary of astronauts' first steps on the surface of the moon. My dad was working for NASA at the time. He was always bringing home official NASA photographs of astronauts, of rocket ships and all NASA-related images, plus sew-on patches of the mission insignia, rocket-shaped lollipops, etc. We had a large, framed reproduction of the iconic 'earth rise' photo hanging in my parents' bedroom for a long time. I remember this event was a BIG thing at our house. I still find it very exciting to hear recordings of the conversation between Mission Control and the astronauts in the lunar module on its way to touch down on the moon's surface :)

Cool! My dad was at the Cape in the space race running up to the moon trips. He was running radar tracking the rockets as they were launched. My DS was able to go to the Cape with my dad for a tour. Wished I had been able to go. Did get to go to aviation museum in DC and listen to him speak of the big rocket display they have. Dad ended up taking a leave to get his EE then ultimately ended up as a civil servant head of F15 radar at RAFB still worked radar after all those years!

Amazing what they did with as little of computer help and advanced technology they had.
