My Duffy could use some jingles - UPDATE
Our older Pom mix dog had an anal cyst burst this past Saturday with lots of bleeding. We did a ER visit to the vet hospital and was told to schedule surgery for removal today. We just dropped him off and hoping for a benign prognosis as Surgeon said she can only do very small margins for removal. He is our rescue baby approx age 15 -16 but a very active citizen. His QOL and comfort is our top priority and hoping for the best outcome.
UPDATE PATHOLOGY REPORT: Good News! Benign perianal adenoma common in mostly male dogs.

Thank you all for your jingles! I really feel they make a difference to help get through life's obstacles.

Jingles jingles and more! My brother's dog had a similar problem and recovered without issue, but she is bigger (60 lbs), but about the same age. If infected anal glands are also a problem my compounding pharmacy makes a series of Rx's with different med combinations depending on what your Vet wants that have a soft curved tip to make insertion easier. PM if you want contact info.

Hope he's ok! He's adorable.

How is the cute fluff ball doing today?
Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please
We will pick Duffy up this afternoon from vet hospital. Surgeon said the removal procedure was more external than internal which was good news. However, we still have to wait a week for the pathology report and are hoping for benign results.
Srhorselady - thanks for that info. I understand Duffy will be on antibiotic oral pills and some pain meds for a few days.
Thank you all for your jingles! I know all you pet and horse owners really understand when one of your non-human family member is ill. Thank you!!

Thanks for the update. I'm glad Duffy's coming home. I hope the pathology report is good.
Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please
Hope Duffy is making a full and fast recovery!
Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please
Thanks for the update. Jingling for a very boring pathology report.
Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please
Jingling for a fast and complete recovery!
Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please
I missed this before, or I would have already been jingling. But my goodness, Josette, we do need a cuteness alert!

Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please
The challenge now is getting the pills into him twice a day with food. He gets antibiotics for 10 days and 4 days of anti-inflammatory as he is quite swollen in the incision area. Pain pills too if needed. I've tried inserting pill into a cheese cube but he is now spitting out not taking the cheese. Then we wrestle a bit until I get him to swallow. Tomorrow, I'll buy some sliced turkey as Duffy loves it and so next attempts will be turkey wrapped pills.

Many good wishes for Duffy!
I found peanut butter on a little piece of cracker like saltine can bury a pill. Something about the sticky PB and the crackly cracker confuses them and they eat it.

My mother covers the pills in Peanut butter, wraps the in turkey with a touch of PB to seal, and then wraps in turkey bacon with a touch of PB to seal.
Most of the time she's successful!

I'm glad he is doing well so far. And you're right, we animal lovers certainly understand when one of our non-human family is sick...
Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please
Duffy is beautiful and am sending you jingles for a pain free and fast recovery!
Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please
Jingles for Duffy's continued healing!
Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please

Have you tried Pill Pockets?
Re: My Duffy could use some jingles - please
I got some sliced turkey breast to wrap the pills. He almost takes my fingers off as he loves it and is very food driven. The only side effect is some mild diarrhea from the antibiotic which we were warned about. My other concern besides waiting for the lab report is hoping his hair will grow back. Poor dog looks like a baboon from the back (shaved for surgery). He had started to get alopecia on his body and lost much of his tail the past 2 years - - must wear a jacket outside. He looks "normal" from the front view until you see his hind end.

Re: diarrhea...Put him on some probiotics like Geneflora for the duration of the antibiotic and two weeks afterwards. The diarrhea will stop and his gut flora won't be depleted. Also, give the probiotic at least two hours after the antibiotic.
Glad to hear he's doing so well!

Thank you! Will call vet office tomorrow to pick up. Duh - great suggestion and I should have asked for it.

We use yogurt instead of powdered probiotics when our guys are on ABX.
