Curb reins with no buckle?

Can anyone explain the reason for the way the ends of these reins are attached (lower part of picture)? There's no buckle, and the leather is sewn together and there's a keeper that holds the reins together.

I've never seen that. Interesting. Maybe it's to avoid having the metal of the buckle so the reins don't interfere?

I believe that arrangement is for when you want to drop the curb reins to the horse's neck and work only with the snaffle reins. You can slide the keeper down so the curb reins at a safe length.

Aha! That makes more sense than anything I can come up with, lol.

yes I agree. Additionally, in my experience none of my curb reins have had buckles, always sewn together... only the snaffle rein has a buckle.....
